TED Talks provide presentations on a variety of subjects. Many of their videos are evidence-based, so you may want to use when doing research. APA 7th edition provides details about how to cite TED Talks in different formats.

In-text Citation for Paraphrase

If you paraphrase information from the Talk, for the in-text citation, you will need to provide the speaker as the author and the date of the presentation. 

  • Moral imagination can be looked at as being grounded and enhanced through immersing in others’ lives (Novogratz, 2020)

Or

  • Novogratz (2020) explained that moral imagination can be looked at as being grounded and enhanced through immersing in others’ lives.

In-text Citation for Quotation

If you quote information from the Talk, you will need to provide a timestamp (time that the information is given) instead of a page number. 

  • Novogratz (2020, 1:14) asserted that, “Moral imagination starts with empathy, but it does not content itself simply to feel another’s pain. Empathy without action risks reinforcing the status quo.” 

Or

  • One aspect of moral imagination is that it “starts with empathy, but it does not content itself simply to feel another’s pain. Empathy without action risks reinforcing the status quo” (Novogratz, 2020, 1:14).

References List

  • Give the speaker as the author.
  • Provide the date of the Talk – Year, Month Date. 
  • Provide the title of the Talk in italics.
  • After the title, put Video in square brackets.
  • For the publisher, put “TED Conferences.” 
  • Provide the Talk’s URL. Be sure that the URL is functional when you submit your paper.

For a paraphrase, provide TED as the author. Because the Talk’s presenter is not mentioned in the in-text citation, you can mention their name in your text. 

  • According to Duckworth (TED, 2020), having only talent is not a guarantee of success because you also need to have passion and perseverance.

Or

  • Having only talent is not a guarantee of success because you also need to have passion and perseverance (TED, 2020).

In-text Citation for Quotation

For a quotation, provide TED as the author and a timestamp. 

  • Duckworth (TED, 2020, 1:27) contended that, “Interests are not discovered through introspection. Instead, interests are triggered by interactions with the outside world. The process of interest discovery can be messy, serendipitous, and inefficient.” 

Or

  • A person’s interests are discovered in many ways. For example, they “are not discovered through introspection. Instead, interests are triggered by interactions with the outside world. The process of interest discovery can be messy, serendipitous, and inefficient” (TED, 2020, 1:27).

References List

  • For the author, put TED. 
  • Provide the date of the Talk – Year, Month Date.  
  • Provide the title and the presenter’s name in italics.
